What is Overfishing?
Overfishing is simply a problem where humans catch to much fish from the oceans in such massive quantities. Overfishing also takes out more fish than the fish can naturally reproduce. In the recent times, technology, better equipment making fish easier to catch with less effort. For a fact Scientists and researchers report that the fish populations have fallen to a level called 'crisis'. This makes the matter worse because in the process of Overfishing they destroy other marine creatures and the ecosystem. |
Why does Overfishing happen?
Unsustainable Fishing: This involves using nets, fishing methods and other equipment that catch too much fish. A word that describes this is 'Endangered'. It also involves catching other sea creatures in the process. These are known as a 'By-Catch'. By-Catch is a word that is described by destroying sea creatures and throwing them back into the ocean when not wanted. Another word meaning By-Catch is 'Discards'. These animals include Turtles, Sharks, Seabirds, Young fish, Corals and many more. They also catch tiny fishes and prevent them from growing to reproduce which causes destruction to the Ecosystem. Economic and Food Needs: The total of sea creatures that fishing industries bring ashore is taken to the markets and to the needs of consumers. In the past century the food and fish needed has multiplied severely. This, together with the economic ambitions of fisheries have forced them to catch more fish than required. |
Whose responsibility is it to look after the Ocean?
In your head your thinking " Whose responsibility is it to look after the ocean? ". Well as a fact the ocean doesn’t really have an owner. It has people who give a little something every day that helps make the ocean well-restored and makes the ecosystem work correctly. The ocean is looked after by millions of people. These people are us. The ocean is a big source of life for us to survive and to adapt to earth's living. But most of the responsibility is taken by the Marine Conservation companies that investigate the sea creatures and test how the ecosystem works through time. These Marine Conservation companies are located threw out the world. If we didn’t have these Marine Conservation companies today the Oceans would be suffering, miserably. The main Company in Australia is called "The Australia Marine Conservation society". If you want to learn more or find out where it is located. Click Here: http://www.marineconservation.org.au/ |
What impacts does this have?
Number 2: Economic Impact Overfishing does not guarantee that, and soon, big investments will go to waste and people will soon retire from working.
Number 3: Biodiversity Constantly fishing for particular species means soon that kind of fish will be extinct.
Number 4: Ghost Fishing Many large fisheries stay for weeks and months in the deep oceans and sometimes loose there fishing nets.
Number 5: Pollution Oil and liquid spills, chemical, and solid elements discarded into the water by fishing boats/vessels/trawlers often hurt sea creatures.
